The Lost Wax Casting Process

From Natural Form to Finished Metal Art

Every piece begins with an idea, a natural form, or an object worth preserving. Using photography, photogrammetry, laser scanning, or digital modeling, the original shape is transformed into a detailed digital file. From there, a wax pattern is printed, refined, and prepared for casting.

The wax is surrounded by plaster investment and burned away during a long burnout cycle, leaving behind a detailed cavity for molten metal. Using a custom-built vacuum casting machine, metal is drawn into the mold to capture fine details with precision. Once cooled, the piece is removed, cleaned, sanded, polished, and finished by hand.

Patinas may also be added using heat and layered chemical treatments, creating colors that range from bright white and fiery red to coastal greens and aged bronze tones.

About the Artist

Jake Piskura

Horseneck Metals crafts custom ocean-inspired jewelry shaped by a lifelong love of the ocean, a background in mechanical engineering, and a deep appreciation for the natural world. Based on the South Coast of Massachusetts, the work reflects both the region’s coastal environment and the precision of an artist with decades of technical design experience.

After more than twenty years in mechanical engineering, Horseneck Metals was created as a way to step away from strictly industrial work and return to the creative side of design, craftsmanship, and making. Each piece is a reminder that nature remains the ultimate designer.
